History

"The more you know about the past, the better prepared you are for the future." - Theodore Roosevelt

At Ledbury Primary School, our History Curriculum is designed to ignite children's curiosity about the past and help them understand how it has shaped the world they live in today. Through rich storytelling, big questions, and hands-on experiences, we encourage our children to think like historians - exploring evidence, making connections across time, and reflecting on how history influences our lives. From ancient civilisations to Ledbury's local heritage, our pupils develop a sense of identity, belonging and an appreciation for the diverse stories that have shaped our society.

What makes our History Curriculum Special?

Big Questions Drive Learning

Each topic in our history curriculum is driven by an enquiry question designed to spark curiosity and encourage deeper thinking. We begin in Year 1 with events just beyond living memory, such as the first flight, and gradually move further back in time, reaching as far back as the Stone Age in Year 6. This carefully planned journey helps children develop a strong chronological understanding, allowing them to place events in context and see how history has unfolded over time.

Year 1 - Why did man want to fly and has it been a good thing?

Year 2 - What rights did children have in Victorian Britain?

Year 3 - How did the reign of Henry VIII affect Ledbury and Britain?

Year 4 - Were the English ever English?

Year 5 - How did the ancients control water and how did water control them?

Year 6 - How has humankind affected the world?

Bringing Local History to Life: Our Work with Ledbury Heritage Centre

At Ledbury Primary, we believe that learning about the past starts right on our doorstep. Through collaboration with the Ledbury Heritage Centre, we offer our pupils the opportunity to explore the rich history of our town. By handling artefacts, visiting historical sites, and learning from local experts, children gain a deeper understanding of Ledbury’s heritage and its role in shaping broader historical events. This hands-on approach brings history to life and fosters a strong sense of pride and connection to their local community.

A Week of Discovery: World War II Week

World War II Week is a highlight of our history curriculum at Ledbury Primary, offering children a hands-on and immersive experience of life during wartime Britain. Throughout the week, pupils take part in role-play activities, hear stories from local visitors and explore artefacts that bring this significant period to life. From rationing to air raid drills, children gain a vivid understanding of the challenges people faced and the resilience shown during the war. It’s a powerful way to deepen historical understanding while building empathy and connection to the past.

Black History Month: Celebrating Voices and Contributions

Each October, we celebrate Black History Month at Ledbury Primary by exploring the lives, achievements, and stories of Black individuals who have shaped history in the UK and around the world. Through inspiring lessons, assemblies, and creative classroom activities, pupils learn about significant figures, both past and present, and reflect on themes of equality, identity and resilience. It’s a valuable opportunity to promote inclusion, deepen understanding, and celebrate the richness and diversity of our shared history.
